student planting

Second Graders enjoyed a fun field trip day at HealthBarn USA, INC in Ridgewood, New Jersey. The students learned about composting, planting, gardening, and the importance of eating healthy while using fresh and healthy ingredients.

In the composting pile, students  had to "turn over" the soil and compost material to help the process along.  Healthbarn will use that soil for planting and gardening.  In the garden, students learned about spices and herbs. Students got to smell lemon balm, lavender, oregano and many other natural herbs and spices.  They walked throughout the garden and saw lettuce, strawberries and other fruits/vegetables that were beginning to grow.  Each student planted a "pea plant" in a newspaper pot!  The students got to take them home to plant them in their own pots or gardens.

The most favorite station was the "Smoothie Station!" Students  used fresh ingredients like strawberries, bananas, yogurt, orange juice, honey and put them in a blender. The students loved the taste and they even got to take the recipe home!

Our second graders had an amazing time and learned so much!
